Sparkplug Comic Books, Guapo Comics and Coffee, Tugboat, Teenage Dinosaur, Sweetpea Baking Company and the Kukoc Awards throw a party! This gala opening party for the Stumptown Comics Fest will include a comics reading, free food, an awards presentation and book premiere. About as much as we could pack into one evening.

Nine plus comic artists will be reading from their comics blown up large for the whole world to see. Readers will include Sarah Glidden (How To Understand Israel in 60 Days), Julia Wertz (Fart Party), Trevor Alixopluos (Mine Tonight), Minty Lewis (PS Comics), Austin English (Windy Corner), Theo Elsworth (Capacity), Jason Shiga (Bookhunter), Liz Baillie (My Brain Hurts) and more.

The Maisie Kukoc award for Comics Inspiration will be presented during the reading. It rewards a self-publisher of small-press, hand-made comics (sometimes called “mini-comics”), on the basis of merit and financial need. The award this year is 400 bucks.

The comic premiere: Nerd Burglar a Free Comics Anthology of Portland based cartoonists will premiere at this event. The book presents new stories by eight artists: Sarah Oleksyk, Bobby Madness, Tim Root, Shawn Granton, Jennifer Parks, Chris Cilla, Aron Nels Steinke and Elijah Brubaker. Nerd Burglar is co-published by Teenage Dinosaur, Tugboat Press and Sparkplug Comic Books.

The Food: Sweetpea Baking Company (1205 SE Stark St. Portland) will be providing delicious baked goods. As usual we will also have drinks and more eats from local businesses.
